This time I had a similar recurring dream that I was traveling with my mom and sister and we were driving back to our hometown in Ohio. I live in California now and they live in Florida and my mom really wanted to go back to see the house, even though the other family had already moved in and my past streams. The family had been waiting to move in, but in this one, this is the first time that the family was fully moved in and my mom was like I just have some things I still have to get and as we were pulling up, I was like wait a minute we’re gonna sneak in when they’re not home that doesn’t feel right and she was like, yeah, it’s fine. I just have to get some things out of the closet in the basement like it’s fine. We went in. It was remodeled and I totally different aesthetic which I kind of liked the aesthetic, but it was different and I felt uncomfortable because I felt like we were trespassing. We should’ve at least ask them if we could come get the remaining items and I was kind of just waiting in the kitchen, which is near the garage so I could leave as soon as my mother got her things, but it was taking a long time so I started looking around. I went to go see like where my old bedroom was and it was totally different and it wasn’t even a bedroom anymore, which I felt fine about it. I was just kind of noticing. I went into the basement though and in my real life my childhood home had a very unfinished basement was very big and dark and I remember thinking it was so scary when I was a kid and it was still dark and I had that same feeling of being so afraid but it was full of things that were not ours so it was recognizable, but it wasn’t and I went back upstairs, and my mom was gathering her things and I opened the back door to go sit on the deck while I waited and when I open the door I saw that the family was home. They were just all outside and they were really surprised to see me and they came in and started talking to me and I was very apologetic. I was like you know I’m so sorry we tried to tell her it wasn’t appropriate. She just said that she let you know that she had a few things to get and the mother of the family. It was like it’s fine. You know how long is it gonna take and I said just a few minutes like I’m so sorry. We’ll be out of your hair soon, but my mom kept remembering more and more things that she had to get, and it was taking a really long time. The family was trying their best to you know just go about their business and ignore us, and they were being very generous and they were trying to finish dinner because the next day was the first day of school for their children and they had young children and they had like some family in town so it was really full like a busy house and my mom was just like really stalling, like not wanting to leave and some of her dishware that she really liked. I guess she had agreed to give to the family in the sale of the house which isn’t true in real life, but it was all in the wet bar where it was when we lived there and it felt weird to like leave it there cause my mom really liked it so much and you know I gathered up my things and it was taking me a while cause I had taken so long I was kind of like I’d read a book at one point and I was like waiting. I was talking to the mom about her kids school since I’m a child Therapist I was just trying to be as polite as I could well also feeling really awkward and I had to get back to go to work the next day too so it was like we gotta we gotta wrap this up and I noticed they had like a box of snacks on the table and I grabbed a pack of cool ranch Doritos and put it in my bag, not thinking much of it, but one of their family members saw me do it and they were like what’s in your bag what’s that in your bag and the more I tried to adjust the bag in the dream the chips kept coming to the top and I was like oh no I already had those and he was like no you didn’t. I saw you take that and I was like OK I’m sorry it’s just been a long time and I’m really hungry. I’m really sorry though and the mom said no no it’s OK but the family member was really upset. He was like she can’t just steal from you like they shouldn’t even be here so that’s why I was like come on Mom. We really have to leave and I started ushering her out and eventually, I was able to get her out into the car so we could leave, but it was really emotional for her like she wasn’t ready to go yet but or she was having complicated emotions around it, but it felt like a relief to finally be out of that house and moving on with her
This dream seems to be a rich tapestry of themes surrounding family, nostalgia, personal ethics, and change. Let's decode its elements and generate an interpretation:
Traveling with Family: You're on a journey with your mother and sister, both literally and metaphorically. This suggests a shared emotional journey or issue that involves your family dynamics. The fact you are all traveling suggests a movement or transition in life—a change of pace, perspective, or goal.
Returning to Hometown: Returning to Ohio, a place now distant both geographically and emotionally, indicates a longing or need to reconnect with past roots, history, or unresolved issues. It also suggests nostalgia and the discomfort of confronting how things have changed.
The Old House and Trespassing: The house symbolizes a part of your past and identity. Trespassing into the newly occupied house represents grappling with the discomfort of moving on, respecting boundaries, and how the past has been "taken over" or changed. Your discomfort represents internal conflict about revisiting the past versus accepting and embracing change.
Your Mother's Actions: Your mother retrieving items symbolizes holding onto parts of the past. Her reluctance to leave demonstrates the difficulty of letting go. This may reflect real-life difficulty in accepting changes or moving on.
Changes and Adaptation: The house's remodeling and aesthetic alterations signify how the past has changed—unrecognizable and foreign. Though you appreciate some aspects, it still feels invasive, highlighting feelings about personal or family transformation.
The Unfinished Basement: This dark, scary space often indicates suppressed fears or memories. Here, despite avoiding confronting these elements, you still face them—a sign that there are unresolved issues or deep-rooted fears that demand attention.
Interacting with the New Family: Your interaction with the home’s new residents highlights respect for boundaries and understanding others' perspectives. The polite engagement indicates your attempts to maintain diplomatic relations despite internal discomfort.
Family Tensions and Ethics: The tension over your presence and “borrowing” snacks shows an internal struggle with personal ethics, fear of judgment, and family dynamics where convenience conflicts with personal beliefs.
Your Profession as a Therapist: Engaging with the children's school suggests your role as a counselor extending into your personal life, trying to maintain calmness and understanding amidst discomfort and personal chaos.
The Dorito Incident: Taking the snack without realizing and then caught represents a subconscious guilt or fear of taking liberties in life that others disapprove of. It showcases how seemingly small actions can amplify into significant ethical dilemmas or internal guilts.
Departure: The final scene of urging your mother to leave signifies an effort to move on from the past. It's an indication of relief from releasing burdensome emotional ties and accepting evolution.
Complex Emotions: Your mother’s emotional resistance to leaving and your subsequent relief symbolize the juxtaposition of emotions when letting go—sadness, reluctancy from her side, and relief for you, suggesting different comfort levels with transitions between past and present within your family unit.
In conclusion, this dream articulates a narrative of emotional complexity involving family ties, ethics, and acceptance of change. It encourages reflection on boundaries, the struggle between past and present, letting go, and reconciling with change. It serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between honoring the past and embracing the future.
